If you haven’t seen Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One (2018), then you might not comprehend the extent of what a world of Virtual Reality might look like.

In the film, we were transported to the dazzling world of OASIS, a sprawling virtual universe where we can get away from the struggles of the real world to a place where we can learn, play, work and live.

In 2018 this seemed like a complete fantasy. However, as technology makes advances, especially in the area of VR then this futuristic world of Ready Player One seems a lot closer than we think.

After all, OASIS already exists to some extent in the online multiplayer platforms and VR ecosystems through games like Fortnite, Roblox and VR Chat allowing people to get together, socialize and create things in shared digital spaces.

Meta, Apple and Microsoft are investing billions into creating a ‘metaverse’, which is very similar to the film and the newer headsets such as Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro are making experiences more realistic and accessible.

As this tech is getting lighter, cheaper and more powerful so a full body experience like Ready Player One is surely just around the corner.

In the film, the players wear advanced body suits that enables them to feel every sensation from a punch to and explosion.

Researchers, such as Teslasuit and HaptX, in our ‘real world’ are already making haptic gloves, bodysuits and treadmills allowing us to interact with our environments with more precision through pressure, temperature and vibrations.

Chuck in artificial intelligence and you’ve got yourself an experience that’s reality, surely.

Ready Player One also explores the social and ethical aspects of living in a virtual world.

Things that are very relevant to us today, looking forward. With people working remotely, socialising online and creating digital identities, we are concerned with topics such as privacy, addiction and inequality.

If we created an OASIS, how do make sure it enhances our real lives rather than replaces them?

We should be prepared to step into a rich and immersive virtual world in the next decade by watching Ready Player One today.
